Summary - Clinical Studies Provide Proof That Nuts Can Aid Weight Loss

Research from Harvard University shows that including peanuts in a healthy diet can help people lose weight. Peanuts, peanut butter and peanut oil make meals more palatable, more nutritious and more satisfying.

A landmark study published in the Dec. 1999 issue of the Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that diets high in monounsaturated fat from foods like peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oil and olive oil are superior to low-fat diets for heart health.

Today, peanuts are classified in the USDA Food Guide Pyramid with meat, fish, poultry, dry beans, eggs and nuts because of their high protein content. However, because peanuts are plant-based, they do NOT contain cholesterol and some of the saturated fat that is found in animal-based protein. In fact, they contain a much higher percentage of the "good" unsaturated fats than saturated fats. Therefore, peanuts have been placed closer to the bottom of both the Mediterranean and the Vegetarian Food Guide Pyramids, in the "eat daily" category.

In March 2004, the first 90 day clinical results for Florida Treasure Coast participants in The Ram Nut Diet™ showed consistent weight loss and other wellness benefits for Treasure Coast residents taking part in the clinical trial. According to Leonard J. Ram, M.D., Florida Gastroenterology Specialists, P.A., and founder of The Ram Nut Diet™, "The clinical results were very much in line with what has been reported by other diet participants. Weight loss, sometimes dramatic, was documented consistently week after week. Participants also reported many other benefits including more energy and healthier lifestyles. We are very excited about the clinical results."

Based on results from the nearly two dozen clinical trial participants who remained in the test program for 90 days, the average weight loss was one pound per week. A number of clinical participants registered significant weight loss of up to 21 pounds over the 90 day period. One participant lost 17 pounds in four weeks.

October 5, 2001 -- Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) have found that people following a Mediterranean-style, moderate fat weight loss diet were able to keep weight off for a longer period of time than people following the traditionally recommended low fat diet. The findings appear in the October 5th issue of the International Journal of Obesity.

In the study of 101 overweight men and women, half were instructed to eat a low fat diet (20% calories from fat) and half to eat a moderate fat diet (35% calories from fat, mostly monounsaturated from peanut butter, nuts, olive and canola oils). All participants were given guidelines to eat a diet of approximately 1,200-1,500 calories that was low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Study subjects substituted high saturated fat foods, like butter, with healthy monounsaturated fat foods, like peanut butter. They tossed nuts on their salad instead of croutons and used small amounts of full fat salad dressings.

Those in the moderate fat group increased peanut butter consumption by almost a serving (2 tablespoons) per day, increased peanut consumption by a half a serving (1/2 ounce or a small handful) and tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.) by a half a serving over their baseline diets. Other foods such as healthy oils (olive, peanut and canola) and avocados were added in small amounts. Surprisingly, those on the moderate fat diet increased consumption of vegetables by one serving per day.

How Specifically Are Nuts Used in the Ram Nut Diet Program?

Nuts are used in Dr. Ram's weight loss program as appetite suppressants. Clients are asked to eat a small one ounce portion of nuts several times a day, before a meal or between meals, to make you feel full, so you don't eat as much. This is explained in more detail in the book: The Ram Nut Diet.

The new diet called The Ram Nut Diet™ allows dieters to use the foods they love and grew up with to achieve weight loss, improved health and other benefits. "The Ram Nut Diet™ is a low-carb diet with a twist. It is a back to basics diet that features nuts of different varieties coupled with a change in lifestyle to achieve life-long results.

Participants in The Ram Nut Diet™ work with a Weight Loss Consultant to track and monitor their eating habits. They work person-to-person with each participant. The Ram Nut Diet™ provides a very logical back to earth approach to dieting that removes junk food and gives each participant a guide to weekly goals and achievements. The program monitors patterns in each person’s success and molds the Ram Nut Diet around their specific needs.
